Current events and activities of the Foundation:

In 2011-2012 the Marine Biology class at Crisfield Academy and High School began a cooperative effort with the Crisfield Heritage Foundation to create an outdoor classroom. They have identified some of the flora and fauna that inhabit Cedar Island Marsh Sanctuary and have done several water quality analyses.  They will continue with this effort this school year.

As the Marine Biology class is studying the ecology and carrying out the ongoing identifications in the marsh, the CAD class at Tawes Career and Technology Center will be actively engaged in designing a board walk and possibly some osprey nests.

It will be interesting to compare this year’s observations and results with last years to see if Hurricane Sandy had any effect on the marsh.  This will also give our students an opportunity to do a comparative study of collected data.

As Crisfield Academy and High School’s students venture into the marsh, helping  with the study and design of the Cedar Island Sanctuary, it is hoped that they will develop a stewardship for this land and protect it for future generations.

On Friday February 22, 2013 the students returned to the marsh for the first of 4 planned field trips at Cedar Island sanctuary. The class was bused to the location from Crisfield High School and remained on site for several hours, collecting data and water samples.
